Someone develops it every three minutes and there’s currently no cure.
Alzheimer’s Society
I have previously spoken about dementia on Day 8, which was specifically about Lewy Body Dementia. Dementia is a range of symptoms that can include difficulty thinking or even memory loss, and occurs when the nerve cells in the brain become damaged. There are different forms of dementia and many different causes, the main one being Alzheimer’s disease. Dementia can affect memory, moods and behaviour and can get progressively worse leading to sleep, appetite and physical changes. This can cause agitation, aggression and confusion leading to distress for the individual and their family. It affects people over 65 mainly, however can still affect people under 65. There is no cure for dementia however there are therapies and drug treatments to assist people with dementia so that they can live well.
There are more than 42,000 people in the UK under 65 with dementia.
Alzheimer’s Society
Alzheimer’s Society work to research and provide specifically designed support to individuals with dementia in hope to one day live in a world without dementia. I have taken part in fundraising activities for Alzheimer’s Society in the past. This has encouraged me to sign up for their fundraising event, Trek26 Stonehenge. I am excited about taking part in this event, on the 11 September 2021, trekking a 26 mile route. Check out my JustGiving page.
Have a nice day!
